CATBALOGAN CITY —  Researchers from Samar State University (SSU) earned international recognition after “Project TANAW: 3D-Printed Urban Model with Geo-hazard Simulations Using Virtual Environment and AR Projection Mapping” won both the Best Paper Award and Best Presenter Award under the Technology Strand at the 9th International STEAM Research Congress 2026, held on May 21–22.

The award-winning project was led by Engr. Raven C. Tabiongan, together with the project development team composed of Ar. Lhimarose A. Tanseco, Sonny Boy R. Ellema Jr., James R. Cortel, Catherine Joie B. Carcellar, LPT, and Ma. Yvonne S. Chiu.

Project TANAW showcases the integration of 3D urban modeling, geo-hazard simulations, virtual environments, and augmented reality (AR) projection mapping to develop innovative approaches in disaster risk visualization, spatial analysis, and community resilience.

Aimed to support sustainable urban planning and disaster preparedness, the initiative provides an interactive platform for visualizing geo-hazard scenarios and environmental risks within communities. The project was funded by the City Government of Catbalogan and implemented through the Samar Island GIS and Data Analytics Center (SIGDAC), with Samar State University serving as the implementing agency.

The recognition highlights SSU’s and further underscores the role of higher education institutions in producing research initiatives that contribute to science, technology, and community development. University officials and project partners recognized the achievement as a significant milestone that strengthens the institutions’ commitment to advancing research excellence, technological innovation, and impact community-based solutions. Project TANAW has previously gained recognition for promoting the use of emerging technologies in geospatial analysis and urban development, reflecting collaborative efforts among researchers, local government units, and innovation partners in Eastern Visayas and National Capital Region (NCR).
